IFS Therapy (Parts Work)
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate approach to individual therapy that helps you understand the different 'parts' of yourself, including parts that protect you and parts that carry old wounds. It's powerful for trauma, anxiety, and building a healthier relationship with yourself.
Most people carry more than one version of themselves inside. The part that pushes you to keep going no matter what. The part that criticizes before anyone else can. The part that shuts down the second things get hard. IFS is not about picking a side or getting rid of any of them. It is about actually getting to know them.
What This Looks Like
IFS works with the internal parts that make up your inner world, not your literal family. We all carry protective parts, like the inner critic or the part that keeps everyone happy, and more vulnerable parts that hold old pain those protectors are trying to guard. Instead of trying to silence or override these parts, we get curious about them: what they are protecting you from, what they are afraid will happen if they stop, and what they actually need. Sessions are gentle and exploratory, but the shifts tend to be real and lasting rather than surface level.
Who This Is For
IFS is especially useful when you feel pulled in different directions at once, or when self-criticism and perfectionism have a grip that logic alone has not been able to loosen. It also reaches complex trauma, patterns around eating and body image, and the internal tug of war of wanting something and being terrified of it at the same time. If you have ever said part of me wants this but another part is terrified, that sentence is a good sign this approach fits. This is individual therapy focused on your internal parts. It is not family therapy with people you are actually related to.
